The weather is warming up and it’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for summer. If you are ready to put your gardening gloves on (and finally put your mittens away), here are five of our best tips for getting your landscaping and hardscaping ready.
Stop the Slugs
Slugs and snails are very enthusiastic about chomping away at young plants, especially delphiniums and hostas, so much so that they can destroy them before they ever peek their heads above the soil. Slug pellets are a great way to prevent slugs from flourishing in your yard.
Plant Your Veggies
Vegetable crops can be planted as early as May, since the chance of frost is now little to none. The best vegetables to start planting in May include celery, leeks, zucchini, marrows, and globe artichokes.
Move Pots Outdoors
If you have any small or tender plants that you needed to take inside for the winter, take the time to move them outdoors now. If you have particularly sensitive plants, give them the time to gradually adjust to the outdoor temperatures first. If you don’t take your time adjusting them, the leaves might droop.
Keep On Watering
As the weather starts to heat up and you start drinking more water during the day, it’s also important to let your plants drink more water too! As your plants take hold and grow, they will need less water and less attention. If you have all older plants, you only need to water them once they start to wilt or droop.
Enjoy the Fruits of Your Labor
If you have fruit trees or plants, now is the time to start enjoying your harvest! If you have strawberries or other fruits that are ripe, pick them and enjoy them as they emerge.
