Steps to Redecking an Existing Deck in Baltimore

There are times when a deck gets to a point where it’s too far gone to be repaired. It’s then that the deck owner has to consider knocking out their old deck and starting from scratch. However, some people don’t realize the extent to which redecking can save an aging deck from needing to be replaced completely and can save you some money in the process. The process of redecking takes two weekends at most and can completely revitalize your deck, provided you take the following steps.

Steps to Redecking an Existing Deck in Baltimore

Redecking can save an aging deck from needing to be replaced completely, and it can save you some money in the process!

Initial Repairs

First, you need to knock out any major repairs. Inspect your deck and look for any signs of structural damage, like weak posts or joists. You should also look at where the deck connects to the house, where it’s common to see bolts and screws that have rusted away. Tighten up connections to the house, replace any screws or nails that need to be replaced, and if needed, replace boards that are too damaged to be repaired.

Cleaning Decking

Redecking requires some cleaning, there’s just no way around it. Assuming your deck has been maintained relatively decently, most decks just need a good deck cleaner to get in and do a deep clean. Just remember to take basic safety protocols when using chemical deck cleaners, such as eyewear and gloves. If there are tougher stains, you may need to rent a pressure washer to remove them.

Applying a Stain

After your deck is repaired and clean, you need to put down a new protective finish that will last for years to come. If your deck has newer wood, you can definitely use clear or transparent stains, but older decks can often benefit from semitransparent stains. It’ll help the wood look more uniform and blend in any new boards if you have any.

Railing Repair

If your railing is damaged, you may need to replace it entirely. Cut the end posts flush with the deck by using a reciprocating saw and then remove the old railing section by section. Then you can simply install the new railing and your redecking will be complete.
