Three Types of Outdoor Living Spaces

Screen Room & Screened Porch 13

Which outdoor living space most appeals to you?

Outdoor living spaces can be the pinnacle of luxury. Even if you do not plan to construct an outdoor living area fitted with all the features and trimmings possible, you can still achieve a space that is comfortable in pleasant weather, of which Maryland has plenty. You might hear of all kinds of outdoor living features, such as screened porches, three-season rooms, and sunrooms, but what are the pros of each, and what are their differences? The three types of outdoor living spaces described below will give you good insights into what you might want for your home.

Backyard Decks

Backyard decks are the outdoor living spaces with complete openness to the elements at their most basic construction. If you love the sun and want flexibility on your deck, then keeping it open and adding only retractable shade structures is best. If your deck is large enough, you can also add a permanent shade structure like a screened porch, gazebo, pergola, or pavilion.

Decks are perhaps the most flexible type of outdoor living space by design. It could have one level or multiple levels, or one or multiple zones. It could be made of wood, vinyl, or composite, and it could have cascading stairs or a spiral staircase. The design will ultimately depend on what is most functional for you and appropriate to the property.

Screened Porches

Screened porches can be front or back porches that are enclosed with mesh screens, home additions with wrap-around screen windows, or a standalone structure with the same kind of windows.

These outdoor living features are open to the outdoor air and typically do not have solid window coverings unless installed specially. They allow the owners to sit as if outdoors but with the comforts of shade, shelter, and protection from bugs.

These types of rooms have been around for decades and are not going anywhere anytime soon. Today, they can be as plush as indoor living rooms, complete with built-in lighting, separate heating and cooling systems, and outdoor rugs, curtains, and furniture.

Three-Season Rooms

Three-season rooms and sunrooms are the same thing. Some will categorize three-season rooms as a type of sunroom, the other type being the four-season sunroom, which is fully integrated with the house. A three-season sunroom is an uninsulated home addition with large glass windows. They are the same as screened porches, except that they use glass to enclose the windows rather than mesh screens.
