Of course, a deck should look fantastic, but safety comes first. If you want your outdoor living space to be aesthetically pleasing and safe, you should hire us! Keep reading for some deck safety tips that will prepare you for the summer.

Focus on Firm Footings

A deck is only as sturdy as its foundation. A pier system involves digging holes below the frost line and then filling these holes with concrete piers. If the holes are too shallow, this could result in the pier movement, due to frost heave. Frost heave results as an effect of water-saturation during freezing conditions. Frost heave causes the soil to swell, which can make deck posts unstable. If you notice this, then you need to hire a contractor right away.

Screws are Safer Than Nails

For a long time, nails were the top fastener choice, but statistics show that using nails cause decks to collapse. Screw threads grip well and are less likely to become loose. However, not all screws are ideal for exterior usage. Metal screws work well because they aren’t prone to rust and most metal screws don’t react negatively to the chemicals found in treated wood. If your deck is older and you notice that nails were used to construct it, you should hire a contractor to replace them. There are many ways to upgrade your deck without needing to replace it entirely. Freedom Fence can assess that for you.

Have a Maintenance Plan Set

Regardless of the material, all decks take some maintenance, especially wood decking. Make sure to keep your deck boards are taken care of by assessing how loose they are, cleaning them with a mild cleaning product, and making sure to seal the surface. Handling small problems right away versus procrastinating is the best way to make sure these issues don’t become worse. Even if you have a well-constructed deck, after 12-15 years, it may be time to replace it. You should be safe this summer. Assessing your deck promotes safety.
