Reasons to Resurface Your Deck

Freedom Vinyl Deck Contractor in Harford County, MD

A deck should be smooth and stable. Does yours need resurfacing?

A backyard deck should be a pleasant place to sit out with a nice drink, sit around a campfire with friends and family, etc. A backyard deck should last for decades with proper care, and you should not have to worry about any drastic damages. However, a deck can eventually deteriorate. Instead of replacing the entire deck, you can save money by replacing only a part of the deck. What are some reasons to resurface your deck? Is it the service you need?

Do You See These Signs?

Rotting Deck Boards

Rotting deck boards become smaller and smaller, until they completely disintegrate and leave nothing in their place. Rotting deck boards that are still in existence will have many cracks and grooves and may have a soft and spongy feel. There is no saving rotten deck boards. It’s best to replace them.

Warped Deck Boards

Wooden deck boards can cup, curl, and twist when damaged by water. The best way to prevent wooden deck boards from getting out of shape would be to routinely clean and seal them. Staining your deck every few years will protect it from dirt and water. There are ways to mend mild warping, but, in general, it is a lot easier to replace them.

Jutting Screws

If screws are jutting from your deck, it could be a sign of a moisture problem. The screws might be jutting because of the freeze-thaw cycle. If they have only recently gotten out of place, you can fix that by hammering them back into place. On the other hand, if they point to more serious underlying damage, it could be better to replace the deck boards.

Discoloration and Staining

Stained and discolored deck boards can be hard to look at. You might even be hesitant to invite friends over because of how bad your deck looks. If so, deck resurfacing can make your deck look as good as new.

Is the Deck Structurally Sound?

Deck resurfacing is only worth it if you would like to replace deck boards on a structurally sound deck. If the foundational structure is compromised, it is best to stay off the deck and replace the deck entirely.
